In April 2024, a team of West Virginia University students participated in one of the world’s premier cybersecurity competitions, held for the first time on WVU’s campus. 

Locked Shields, now in its fourth year, is an exercise created by NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, with participation from over 40 nations. The competition sees "Blue Teams” from around the world defend computer networks against real-time intrusions from “Red Teams." 2024 marks WVU’s fourth time participating in Locked Shields, and its first time hosting the United States’ Blue Team operations.

In business, success often means breaking down walls, but some walls are better left up – that is, as long as they’re firewalls.

On Tuesday, March 28, WVU partnered with Leidos to host a cybersecurity panel discussion and networking event. Industry experts, Chambers College faculty and faculty from the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources educated students on the current possibilities and future outlook of the field.

With a true passion in her multiple areas of study, Katherine Rexroad has been hooked on West Virginia University’s idea of thinking big since the beginning of her college career.

Hailing from Clarksburg, W.Va., Katherine is a junior in accounting and management information systems, while also minoring in data analytics. And she readily admits that she attributes her passion for her studies to WVU and the John Chambers College of Business and Economics.

This double-majoring sophomore in Management Information Systems and Hospitality and Tourism Management has found that his key to success is beginning early.

It is Frank Kerekes’ first year at WVU, but he has already achieved his studies in the Honors College, working at a financial institution as a branch office administrator and involvement with various clubs.

Only about five months removed from earning his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, Dr. Stephane Collignon has hit the ground running with teaching and research at the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics.

A native of France, the assistant professor of management information systems and his wife Olga Bruyaka, an assistant professor of management at B&E, and their two sons have found their home in Morgantown.

What are management information systems (MIS) students doing on a sleepless Friday night into the wee hours of Saturday morning? Well, coding of course. 

Here at  West Virginia University, we mold our students to be successful in the workforce, and love to see their careers skyrocket. Something we love even more is when we can bring these successful alumni back to campus, providing a milestone for them in their already-successful careers. A great example of that cycle is found in   human resource management expert Cris DeBord, WVU’s newest vice president of talent and culture.

It’s a familiar story for many college professors. They never thought, in their youth, that their career would lead them to teaching.
