WVU Hosts Cybersecurity Panel

In business, success often means breaking down walls, but some walls are better left up – that is, as long as they’re firewalls.

On Tuesday, March 28, WVU partnered with Leidos to host a cybersecurity panel discussion and networking event. Industry experts, Chambers College faculty and faculty from the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources educated students on the current possibilities and future outlook of the field.

“There are hostile nation-states and crime organizations,” said panelist Mike Foster, senior systems engineer at Leidos. “Tremendous amounts of money and talent are being thrown at attacking business and government here – so you’re not going to lack for work.”

With more than 900,000 open positions, cybersecurity is likely to be one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States. The Chambers College is uniquely positioned to help students succeed in the field with the help of the Karen S. Evans Cybersecurity Lab, as well as dedicated faculty like Chris Ramezan, who moderated the panel.

"Cybersecurity is a highly rewarding field, and critically important for today's digitally-charged world," said Ramezan. "This panel gave students a chance to hear from both academics and industry experts about their experiences, and most importantly how to break into the field, emphasizing the importance of education, continual learning, clearances, industry certifications and honing their cybersecurity skills."
