Dual JD-MBA Grad Finds Entrepreneurial Dreams in Baking

“When you’re doing what you love, it doesn’t feel like work.” 

Those are the words of Anna Carrier, a 2009 dual law school and MBA graduate of West Virginia University. From that statement and description, you would think she was talking about practicing law, but that’s not the case. The Chambers College alumna – and Community Business Program Lead for WVU's Encova Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship – is describing her role as the co-owner of The Cupcakerie, a cupcake bakery in downtown Morgantown.

B&E student pitches urban development idea in ‘Real’ Elevator Pitch Competition

Senior business management major Anthony Braxton is known for going first. Last year, he even stated he wants to be the first Mountaineer to end neighborhood violence and crime.

And the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics student continues with high aspirations. Most recently, he competed as one of 12 finalists in the national“Real” Elevator Pitch Competition in St. Louis, Missouri, where he proposed an urban farm that will benefit economically disadvantaged neighborhoods to provide communities both healthy food and hope for the future.

New MIS professor wants to bridge gap between industry and research

Portrait of Stephane CollignonOnly about five months removed from earning his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, Dr. Stephane Collignon has hit the ground running with teaching and research at the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics.

A native of France, the assistant professor of management information systems and his wife Olga Bruyaka, an assistant professor of management at B&E, and their two sons have found their home in Morgantown.

William Peduto

William Peduto was elected to the office of Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh in the General Election on November 5, 2013, and took office in January of 2014. Prior to taking office, he worked for 19 years on Pittsburgh City Council - seven years as a staffer then twelve years as a Member of Council.

Since taking office, Mayor Peduto has lead a collaborative effort to make Pittsburgh a leading 21st Century city. The Peduto administration has partnered with the White House on numerous initiatives, resulting in direct access to federal support related to affordable housing, education, economic development, energy efficiency, immigration, manufacturing, community policing, workforce development and technology.

Jerome Powell

Jerome H. Powell took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on May 25, 2012, to fill an unexpired term. He was reappointed and sworn in on June 16, 2014, for a term ending January 31, 2028.

Prior to his appointment to the Board, Mr. Powell was a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C., where he focused on federal and state fiscal issues. From 1997 through 2005, Mr. Powell was a partner at The Carlyle Group.

Christine A. Poon

Dean, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University Former Vice Chairman of Johnson & Johnson

Christine A. Poon was appointed Dean and John W. Berry, Sr. Chair in Business at The Max M. Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University in April 2009. Poon comes to Fisher after a 30-year career in the health-care industry, most recently as vice chairman and worldwide chairman of Pharmaceuticals at Johnson & Johnson. She served as a member of the company's Board of Directors and Executive Committee and was responsible for managing the pharmaceutical businesses of the company. Her areas of expertise include domestic and international business operations and sales and marketing. Poon began her career at Johnson & Johnson in 2000 as company group chairman of Pharmaceuticals and was appointed worldwide chairman of Pharmaceuticals in 2001. She was appointed worldwide chairman of Medicines & Nutritionals in 2003 and was named a vice chairman of the Board of Directors in 2005. In 2007, Poon assumed responsibility for the Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation, the Corporate Office of Science and Technology, the Corporate Office of Information Management, Worldwide Procurement and Worldwide Operations.

William Sheedy

As group president for the Americas, William M. Sheedy oversees the company's client relationships with card issuers, merchants, merchant acquirers and third-party processors in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

More recently, Sheedy served as president of North America and global head of corporate strategy and business development. Prior to his leadership role in Visa's corporate restructuring in 2007 and successful initial public offering in 2008, he was responsible for expanding merchant acceptance and consumer usage of Visa, while providing oversight of areas responsible for industry cost and revenue studies, merchant incentive programs and improving the point-of-sale operating performance of Visa products. Sheedy has also been key in supporting Visa product and brand strategies as well as other initiatives that are critical to realizing Visa's long-term growth potential.

Kelly King

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BB&T Corp.

Kelly S. King, chairman and chief executive officer of BB&T Corp., has been confirmed as one of the speakers who will give talks at WVU as part of the College of Business and Economics 60th anniversary celebration. King will speak on Nov. 7.
