Donald E. Panoz has started astoundingly successful companies all over the world, but his success started in West Virginia in 1961 when he and U.S. Army buddy Milan “Mike” Puskar co-founded what would become globally recognized Mylan Pharmaceuticals.

So when the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics presented Panoz with an honorary doctorate degree in business administration — at Commencement Exercises on May 13 — with 512 graduates — and Panoz spoke to the graduates — well, that makes for a pretty special day.

When 12 B&E finance students enrolled in the inaugural Applied Investment Management course, they had no idea it would take them to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Application for WV Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship now open

Demonstrating the commitment to foster entrepreneurship in the state, West Virginia University announced earlier this year that the University had won a two-year bid to host the Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship in 2017 and 2018 after submitting a proposal to host the summer event for students entering their sophomore, junior and senior years of high school.

Applications are now being accepted for GSE, which will run from July 5-25. Application materials, including a 60-second video pitch, are due by April 15. High school students in West Virginia who are accepted into the program will receive a full scholarship for room, board and tuition for the three-week program.

Professor of economics recognized as a 2016 Benedum Distinguished Scholar

Recognizing his remarkable research and scholarly activity, Dr. Brad Humphreys, professor of economics at the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics, is one of four outstanding faculty members at WVU named a 2016 Benedum Distinguished Scholar.

Frank Alderman

In 2012, Dr. Alderman was the recipient of an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and was also awarded Ernst and Young’s Venture Capital Award of Excellence. In 2014, he was selected to be a member of WVU School of Pharmacy’s Centennial Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame. Dr. Alderman is an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and serves on the board of the WVU Foundation. In addition, he is a member of Optum’s Office of the CEO.
