From Student to Scholar

Accounting major Jarell Rimando is helping students like herself as Neidermeyer Scholar

Understanding complex material is challenging, but asking for help can be even tougher. That’s where Neidermeyer Scholars like Philippines native Jarell Rimando come in.

Rimando is a junior Accounting major who last year started in her position as a Neidermeyer Scholar – a student tutor who has previously taken and successfully passed a class that many students struggle with.  The program, named after Dr. Adolph “Ade” Neidermeyer, was established after his retirement to support learning in key business courses through peer-to-peer collaboration.

Having been one of those struggling students herself, Rimando knows firsthand how her peers feel.

“I was getting frustrated because I couldn't understand the material. But having access to students who have already experienced the class and understood what I was having trouble with really helped me,” Rimando said.

This positive experience with the program motivated her to seek assistance in several other courses, and ultimately inspired her to apply to become a Scholar herself so that she could pursue her passions and show her gratitude.

“I love accounting, and I love teaching, and I wanted to continue to improve my skills in both. I also wanted to give back to the Chambers College because of all the opportunities that it’s given me.”

Now more comfortable in her role, Rimando has developed her skills in teaching accounting, networking and communication – all essential for her future goal.

“My end goal, really, is to teach students accounting, because I really love teaching and want to make accounting a little less frustrating,” said Rimando.

Rimando might not be a professor yet, but in her current role she is helping shape future industry leaders. This is why she continually pushes students to ask for help in these foundational classes.

“I used to be really scared when I was asking people that I didn’t know for help. But I want to tell students that it's fine. We all need help sometimes, and you're not alone in experiencing this, so just reach out.”
