WVU’s top seniors named, eight honored with 2022 Order of Augusta

A Black Appalachian first-generation college student graduating with a cumulative 4.0 grade-point average, a two-term Mountaineer Mascot passionate about finding novel therapies for mental health disorders and a young entrepreneur who has worked to empower small farmers in West Virginia are among the accomplished student leaders who have been honored with West Virginia University’s most prestigious student award, the Order of Augusta.

These eight students have distinguished themselves not only by their outstanding academic performance, but also their steadfast dedication to research, efforts to narrow the achievement gap for underrepresented students in their home state and to advance social justice in their communities and beyond.

Doing Good for West Virginia

Originally from Kanawha County, West Virginia, Crystal Good took many twists and turns in life.

As a young girl, Good found a love for writing during her first poem about how we will all shed a colorless tear.

Time to Consider our Graduate Programs

As the spring semester concludes, our students may be considering an online graduate program to coincide with a full-time job or attending a face-to-face program to develop new skills. No matter where they are on their academic journey, the graduate program staff is available to assist them in finding the perfect graduate program. It is a rewarding experience to learn about our students’ goals and desires for their future careers and how we can contribute to their professional success.

As we emerge from a global pandemic, the graduate programs staff has seen a thriving community of education-seekers who add to their educational portfolio with an advanced degree or return to expand upon their existing skillset. The Graduate Programs Office (GPO) had a record number of enrolled graduate students during the academic year 2021-2022, resulting from our faculty and staff’s contribution to encouraging graduate education and welcoming our staff into your classrooms. Our staff supports our students through information sessions, classroom presentations, and individualized student meetings.

Time for Students to Embark on their Next Journey

Summer is just around the corner, which means it’s time for our students to embark on their internships, graduate school, or first full-time job. It’s such a rewarding time for career services professionals as we see our students realize the payoff of their hard work and dedication to their professional success.

The last two years have challenged our students who—to land an internship or job—have had to persevere in their academic and extracurricular activities in the face of a global pandemic. Despite these challenges, the CCD had record student appointments in 2021 and record attendance at the fall 2021 and spring 2022 Business Career & Internship Fair. Our alumni and employer partners have donated over 270 hours to support resume review and mock interview programs, career panels, classroom presentations, and 1:1 career coaching sessions. These numbers are a direct result of our faculty and staff elevating the importance of the CCD. You have welcomed the CCD into your classrooms, designed assignments around professional development, and created incentives for students to take an active role in their professional development.
