A Seed Planted: The Start of JarHead Farms
Natasha Zoe started JarHead Farms LLC as part of Sprouting Farm’s incubator program, which supports the growth of farm-based businesses. She and her father, Stan, noticed that there was a gap in their local market not just for produce, but specifically for fruit. What began as an effort to meet that need quickly gained momentum. As their business grew, they expanded their vision and established JarHead Kitchen Inc., allowing them to share their fruit-based products with a wider market.
Finding Direction Through Vantage Ventures
Zoe discovered Vantage Ventures through West Virginia Hive, a business center located in Beckley, West Virginia. At the time, she knew they needed stronger business guidance beyond just being told to “create a business plan.” She believed that Vantage Ventures would help fill in the gaps of what they didn’t know and give them the push they needed.
“[Vantage Ventures] was a game changer, absolutely.”
Learning to Listen: Growth Through Customer Insight
One of the most valuable takeaways from the program for Zoe was learning to prioritize productive work and truly listen to customers. Before this experience, Natasha and her father hadn’t fully tapped into customer feedback as a resource, as it just wasn’t something they had previously considered. By engaging in more intentional conversations, they not only gained insights into their products and services but also discovered new employees and identified meaningful benefits they could offer.
“I would have never thought to ask our customers for new employees.”
These interactions strengthened their connection to the community and helped shape the direction of their business.
Working Smarter: Tools, Technology, and Efficiency
Vantage Ventures provided access to technical systems that allowed them to easily create contracts, making their transactions more secure and efficient, something they wouldn’t have been able to afford on their own.
During their time in the program, Zoe and her father learned how to better use the resources they already had, especially their community, as already touched upon. They also explored new tools, including using AI for research and improving their advertising strategies.
Another key realization was the value of outsourcing certain tasks, such as aggregation. By doing so, they were able to save time and energy, allowing them to focus more on growing their business and operating more efficiently.
Balancing Challenges and Commitment
The experience didn’t come without challenges. Committing twenty hours a week while running a full-time business was easier said than done. However, Zoe recognized that the effort she put into the program would directly impact her results. By staying consistent and committed, she was able to fully benefit from the program and apply what she learned to JarHead Farms in real time.
Advice for the Next Entrepreneurs
Zoe’s advice to young entrepreneurs reflects what she practices today: build a strong network and learn from others. Understanding what you don’t know is just as important as what you do know. Through Vantage Ventures, she was able to gain insights from fellow entrepreneurs and mentors that helped guide her next steps.
The program helped her recognize the value of a resource that had been there all along, their customers. Today, JarHead Farms has built a strong and supportive community that continues to play a vital role in its success.
