In a world where financial decisions shape the course of our lives, fostering financial literacy from an early age is extremely important.
For the past two decades, Finance University has been at the forefront of equipping K-12 educators across West Virginia with essential financial literacy knowledge to impart to their students. Hosted annually by WVU’s Center for Financial Literacy and Education (CFLE), the generous sponsorship of PRA Group helps fund this valuable educational initiative.
There are a lot of majors in the Chambers College, but Finance is arguably the coolest. (Though maybe I’m just biased because I’m majoring in it.) Let me explain why!
You might think that a career in finance means working as an investment banker on Wall Street, but there are many different paths you can take.
A career in the hospitality industry isn't limited to lodging and restaurant space; it includes all aspects of travel and tourism, event management, theme parks, outdoor recreation, gaming and entertainment. Wherever there is customer service, there is a need for hospitality training.
However, hospitality is also subject to myths and misconceptions that might make
you wonder whether studying it is a good choice. Let’s clear some of those
up.

Originally from Norwalk, Connecticut, Sean Cogdell received his undergraduate degree from Central Connecticut State University, which indirectly led to his career. His college roommate went on to start the company where he currently works, and Cogdell and his partner acquired it in 2016.
Today, Cogdell is pursuing his Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) at the Chambers College.
The estimated value of one hour of volunteer work is almost $32. What are you doing with your time?
The Organizational Leadership program at the Chambers College of Business and Economics is developing thoughtful, altruistic leaders to help businesses and organizations of all kinds “do good while doing good”. By immersing myself in courses on social responsibility and youth development, for example, the Organizational Leadership program exposed me to the vast world of nonprofits.
Are you looking to connect with students who share your academic discipline outside of the classroom?
If the answer is yes, then the Business Living Learning Community (LCC) CLIMB is the place for you. The CLIMB LLC will provide you with an opportunity to live and learn among other undergraduate first year students who are also business majors.
Seasons change throughout the year, and their economic impact can be seen right here in Morgantown. During the fall and winter, everyone moves indoors to enjoy activities like axe throwing and escape rooms. In summer, everyone’s outside enjoying the warm weather, kayaking on the Mon River, and hiking through Coopers Rock.
But why do we see this shift in local economic activity?
My name is Emmy Severs, and I am a 2022 graduate of the John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University. When I graduated with a major in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, I took my stationery company, Lemon Milk Paper Co, full time.
Lemon Milk Paper Co specializes in illustrated paper goods, stationery, stickers and other gifts. We are proud to be owned and operated in West Virginia. I design and illustrate all of my products and sell them through multiple channels including my online storefront and wholesale, which contributes to the majority of my sales. You can find Lemon Milk Paper Co stationery in retail stores across the country.
This fall will mark the start of my seventeenth year working in the career service arena at WVU, and as I write this, I feel like that must be a typo!
But as the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun – and I can’t think of a better way to kick off each academic year than building connections between our students, alumni and employers.
